Melasma and IV Hydration

Article main image

Smooth, clear, and unblemished skin is a priority for millions of men and women around the world, especially as we age. Over time, the skin becomes less elastic, making it more prone to wrinkles and discoloration. Melasma is a common concern facing individuals around the globe, and it can be frustrating and difficult to manage. Melasma and IV hydration are two things that may seem unrelated, but antioxidant nutrients delivered intravenously are something a number of patients ask us about.

What Is Melasma?

A chronic skin condition that causes brown or tan discoloration on the face, melasma is associated with excessive levels of melanin in the skin. It affects more women than men, with between one quarter and one twentieth of total cases being male, and it can noticeably change the look of one’s face. Often associated with extensive sun exposure and damage, pregnancy, hormone treatments, and hyperthyroidism, melasma is seen most often in women aged 20 to 40.

Although it can occur in individuals of any nationality, this condition is most likely to affect Fitzpatrick skin types 3 and 4, or skin with a naturally tanned appearance as seen in the Middle East and Asia. While not harmful or life-threatening, melasma can be very embarrassing for those facing significant discoloration, leading to insecurity and frustration. Melasma should be evaluated and managed by a dermatologist or other licensed physician.

Approaches to Managing Melasma

Despite how common melasma is, there is no known cure. Some approaches, like topical depigmenting agents and retinoids, may help to a degree, but they often do not resolve all pigmentation issues, and spots and marks can persist.

The use of antioxidants in skin care has been studied as one area of interest. Glutathione, for example, has been studied as a tyrosinase inhibitor, a mechanism involved in melanin production in the skin. Research into antioxidants alongside vitamin A and other ingredients typically used in retinoids is ongoing, and results vary from person to person. Any approach to melasma should be discussed with your physician.

Melasma and IV Hydration

For patients already working with a physician on melasma, IV nutritional support is a wellness service some choose to use alongside that care. RevitalIV offers IV blends built around vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and our team can talk with you about what each formula contains and whether it is appropriate for you.

Our practice is led by Dr. Ryan Brown, DO here in Jupiter, FL. RevitalIV’s formulas include options built around brightening ingredients such as glutathione, along with a personalized balance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Our Regenerate antioxidant treatment and Rejuvinate beauty treatment are two of the blends patients most often ask about for skin-related wellness goals. Individual results vary, and no IV blend is a substitute for dermatologic care.

One reason IV delivery is of interest is absorption: the body is relatively poor at absorbing glutathione in oral tablet form, while an intravenous route bypasses the digestive system and delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

If skin appearance is a broader goal for you, our aesthetic treatments in Jupiter also serve patients from Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, and across Palm Beach County. We are happy to walk you through the options during a consultation.
