Vitamins and Hormone Balance

Article main image

Hormones play a key role in the body. They are your chemical messengers, and they influence a long list of processes, including:

  • Growth and development
  • Metabolism, or how your body draws energy from the food you eat
  • Sexual function
  • Reproduction
  • Mood

Here at RevitalIV in Jupiter, FL, we talk a lot about how bioidentical hormone replacement can support the balance of your hormone system. But vitamins, and vitamin deficiencies, can have a powerful effect on hormonal balance too.

Why do hormone imbalances occur?

Both men and women go through natural hormonal changes at certain points in life: puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and andropause, the age-related decline in male hormones. Imbalances can also arise alongside inadequate nutrition, stress, certain medications, environmental toxins, and vitamin deficiencies. It is that last point we want to focus on here.

Which vitamins can help support hormone balance?

Vitamins can play a meaningful role in hormone balance, which is why our providers look at nutrient status alongside any bioidentical hormone pellet therapy. Vitamin supplements should always be taken under the supervision of your physician. Below are a few of the vitamins that have been studied in relation to hormone balance.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, sometimes called the sunshine vitamin, has been studied for its role in regulating insulin, thyroid hormone, and testosterone. Research has found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher likelihood of thyroid antibodies, which are found in people with autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto's.

Vitamin D supplementation has also been examined for its role in insulin regulation and blood sugar balance, which supports the body's natural hormone cycles.

Vitamin D is widely studied for its role in immune function, and research has additionally found a close correlation between vitamin D deficiency and low testosterone (1). In that work, when participants spent more time in the summer sun and their vitamin D levels rose, their testosterone levels rose as well.

And here is the surprising part: plenty of people are vitamin D deficient, even in sunny South Florida.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 helps the body make several neurotransmitters, the chemicals that carry signals from one nerve cell to another. It is needed for normal brain development and function, and it supports the body's production of serotonin and norepinephrine, which influence mood, and melatonin, which helps regulate the body clock.

Vitamin B6 has been studied for its role in easing some symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as mood changes and irritability. Studies have looked at daily doses of around 100 milligrams of B6 in that context.

These are only some of the vitamins that interact with hormone balance. The best way to understand what your own body needs is to book a consultation with a physician who will test your hormone and micronutrient levels together and build a comprehensive plan around the results.

IV Vitamin Therapy and Absorption

Oral supplementation has its place in a well-rounded plan, and IV vitamin therapy approaches the same goal from a different direction. By bypassing the digestive system, IV vitamins move directly into your bloodstream.

For patients working on hormone balance, immune health, and healthy aging, we often recommend a combination of both oral and IV vitamin therapy. Our team serves patients from Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, and throughout Palm Beach County.
